This JazzUp is all about the young guns of jazz. With so much talk about the UK jazz revival, and
with our own JazzUp mission to bring you ‘jazz with attitude’, we present a night filled with the new
On this night, the stage will be filled with some of the brightest and best musicians the UK has to
offer. And all with an average age below 25. Tom Ridout’s band represents the cutting edge, and
features his sister Alex, winner of the 2016 BBC Young Jazz Musician Award, as well as the
virtuoso guitarist everyone is talking about, Rob Luft.
In support, who better than the best young jazz talent from our own area? NHSYBB draws young
players from Hitchin, Stevenage and Letchworth, and directed by Paul Woodin, this will be their
second visit to Club85.
Tom Ridout’s No Excuses
Award winning saxophonist, recorder player, composer and arranger Tom
Ridout was predicted by Jazzwise Magazine in 2012 as an upcoming jazz
musician to watch out for. A recent graduate from the prestigious Royal
Academy of Music, finalist in the BBC Young Musician Jazz Award 2016,Tom
is a prolific composer who fronts his own bands playing his original
Tom has recently released his debut album "No Excuses" which was
launched at The Vortex Jazz club, London in January this year. The album
features original compositions and arrangements by Tom and the No Excuses
band is an up to 13 piece ensemble consisting of the Quintet (sax/recorder,
guitar, piano, bass, drums) with added second guitar, string quartet and brass
trio (flugelhorn, french horn and trombone).The influences for this album
come from a wide range of musical sources including; jazz, folk, 60s rock/pop
and 20th century tonal classical.
