Dave Lewis has put together a stunning lineup of some the UK’s heaviest musicians, especially for
At JazzUp, we bring you all the many facets of jazz, from the classic to the cutting edge, and this
one will be our first journey into the funky side. Add to that Les Jazz Rats DJs spinning vinyl and
you have a night not to be missed.

Al Cherry
Al is a leading UK guitarist with many years’ experience in live and studio work and TV
appearances. His career began with a scholarship awarded by Fender, before he went on to gain a
first class honours degree in Music from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London in
He’s a frequent performer at Ronnie Scott’s and other leading London venues, and has toured
across Europe, America and Japan with artists including Cat Stevens, Paul Young, Percy Sledge,
Sharleen Spiteri, Beverley Knight, Kid Creole, Rumer, Paloma Faith, Carleen Anderson, Katherine
Jenkins, Marti Pellow and Lisa Stansfield. As an educator, Al has over 20 years’ experience of
music tuition, and has taught guitar and general musicianship across all ages.

Carl Hudson
Carl is an exceptional pianist and keyboardist who has performed with numerous acts including
Professor Green, Emeli Sande, Beth Rowley, Jocelyn Brown, Tina Arena and Boy George / Culture
Club. He has also played keyboards for soul artists Omar Lye-Fook, Leon Ware, The Jones Girls
and Jean Carne at venues around London and the UK.
Carl also works closely in the studio with producer SoulPersona, recording and playing alongside
veteran Jamiroquai drummer Nick Van Gelder.
Carl released his first album, entitled 'Zoology For Martians' in May 2013. Carl's second album,
'Pixel Planet' was released in Feb 2016. The music is a mix of Funk, Hip-Hop and ambient
Electronica, and features a large cast of London musicians, including Level 42's Pete Ray Biggin
on drums. It is currently in distribution on Splash Records, a UK based independent label
specialising in Brit Funk, and co-run by Jean-Paul 'Bluey' Maunick who is also the leader of the
band Incognito.

Neville Malcolm
Neville is one of the most in-demand bass players in the country. Known as ‘Level-Neville’, he is an
understated star on both acoustic and electric bass, combining an earthy, soulful feel with effortless
technical ability.
Coming from a background in Gospel music, Neville started out playing organ and guitar, switching
to bass as he developed an ever greater interest in jazz and other music. Turning professional in
the early ‘90s, he worked with Philip Bent and Steve Williamson and became part of London’s Acid
Jazz scene.
He has since performed all over the world and recorded with Billy Cobham, Gabrielle, Tom Jones,
Carl Orr, Alex Wilson, Nathan Haynes, Marlene Shaw, Dave Valentin and Jack DeJohnette. He has
also toured and recorded extensively with two of the world’s best known jazz crossover groups,
Incognito and Us3.

Nic France
Drummer Nic France has been at the top of his game since arriving in London In 1980 when he
began working as a session musician. Within the first three years he played with a ‘Who's Who’ of
British contemporary jazz and several international artists Ian Carr's Nucleus, Allan Holdsworth,
Jim Mullen, Martin Taylor, Ronnie Scott, Kenny Wheeler, Hank Crawford, David
‘Fathead’ Newman, John Taylor, Gordon Beck, Loose Tubes, L. Shankar and Mose Allison. He also
appeared on a TV drum clinic with Billy Cobham.
His impeccable sense of groove and dynamics quickly made him a sought-after sessionist in the
Rock and Pop music world as well, with such artists as: Bill Withers [2 tours in UK. & Europe],
Tanita Tikaram [3 World tours and 3 albums] and Working Week [3 European tours, 1 in Japan and
3 albums]. He has recorded with Pete Townsend, Thomas Dolby and played with Annie Lennox
and Nigel Kennedy.
He has also been working with David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) in his project and is featured on the
DVD ‘David Gilmour Live’.
He is also part of the regular ensembles of artists such as Andy Sheppard (Quartet), Julian Lloyd
Webber (Bossa Nova Band), and Terry Callier.
Nic France has been an endorser of Paiste Cymbals since the early 80's, Pearl Drums since 1989
and Protection Racket cases since 2001.

Dave Lewis
Originally from St. Louis USA, Dave is a consummate, passionate performer who is well respected
in the fields of Jazz/Dance/Soul & Rock. Dave has toured and recorded throughout the States,
Europe and Japan, and has made numerous TV, Radio and Video appearances.
He has worked with John Martyn, Bryan Ferry, Tommy Chase, John Mayall, Lamont Dozier and
Eric Clapton amongst many others.
Dave’s playing is soulful and funky with a natural affinity to the Jazz/ R&B greats – such as Dexter
Gordon, King Curtis & Joe Henderson. He is known for his distinctive tenor sound and individual
An Honours Grad from Berklee College of Music who’s a well known face in demand player on the
London jazz scene. Dave currently leads his own seven piece band ‘1UP’ as well as playing &
recording with the Blockheads.

Les Jazz Rats
Fresh from their hard-grooving appearance at London’s Spiritland, our resident JazzUp DJs Eric
and Sten will provide the perfect dance floor sounds to warm up for the band, and also after as you
take full advantage of Club85’s late bar.
