THE BATTLE FUND IS NOW LIVE!!!!!

Go fund me link: https://gofund.me/15693e75

After the threat, of closure and redevelopment of Club 85 in Hitchin, we now have the amazing opportunity to buy the building and save this Iconic Grassroots Music Venue that is otherwise under iminent threat of closure and redevelopment.

I am starting this Fundraiser as the first step of the journey, to raise the ‘Battle Fund’ we need to cover Surveyors, Lawyers, Set-up Fees etc, hopefully a working capital for the new company and to help us through the transition.
THE PLAN
We will need to raise around £2m to £2.2m to buy the premises and the business.
• We are setting up a not-for-profit Community Interest Company to purchase and run the venue.
• We will be running more crowdfunders and prize draws.
• We will be inviting Donations.
• We want to run a share sale – giving everyone the opportunity to invest in the future of Club 85.
• As a CIC we will also be able to attract grants and match funding from a myriad of funding bodies.
• And of course, lots of Fundraising events.
THE FUTURE
There’s so much more we can do to make this Grassroots Music Venue a safe centre of inclusive creativity, when we have the whole building and the income from both the bars.
• There will be lots more daytime use of the venue for classes, workshops, exhibitions, as a rehearsal space or for shooting videos.
• The downstairs bar will become a quirky music bar/lounge, with sofas, a small stage, piano, congas and chilled alternative music.
• There will be disabled toilet facilities on both levels and a lift, as well as events for people with extra needs, like special Sensory Sensitive Events that are quieter with static and soft lighting.
• As a CIC we will be able to actively attract funding to bring a diverse programme of performances as well as offering apprenticeships and training for future techs, promoters etc
• We want to work with local schools and educational groups to promote music education and awareness throughout the region.
Most importantly we will be a Beacon of Inclusivity in North Herts.
THE BACK STORY
23 years ago Bob Mardon took on the handshake agreement with Jas Lidder the owner and landlord of Club 85 in Hitchin that gave us control of the function room.
Since then we have built it into a successful Grassroots Music Venue, with a constant programme of live gigs large and small, local and international, with …
• 3000+ shows
• At least 10,000 band performances
• Which means we’ve provided 40,000+ opportunities for musicians to play on this lovely stage.
• Countless careers have started here, as well as the obvious Enter Shikari, James Bay, Don Broco, The Subways and so many more – there are the Sound Techs, Lighting Techs, and Industry Professionals for whom Club 85 has been the first rung of the ladder into a career in the Music Industry.
• And of course, there’s all the Friendships and Relationships that have been forged here and have stood the test of time as we built a community around the venue.
• Club 85 is immensely important to the local community as a safe welcoming space where performers cut their teeth and audiences see and hear it first.
So many magical moments have occurred in this glorious barn so far, it’s a very special place.
THE SMALL PRINT
We have set the target to £30,000 as this is how much we need quickly to get the ball rolling.
Of course we’d love to smash straight through it, so when we hit the target we will leave it open and of course every single penny donated will go towards purchasing the venue and securing it for future generations.
Many thanks

THE BACK STORY.
It is 23 years since Bob took on the handshake agreement with Jas Lidder the owner and landlord, that gave us control of the function room at Club 85.
Since then we have built it into a successful Grassroots Music Venue.
• 3000+ shows
• At least 10,000 band performances

• So many magical musical moments have occurred in this glorious barn, it’s a very special place.

THE BOMBSHELL.
It’s 9 months ago now that our landlord Jas dropped the bombshell that he intended to retire and was going to re-develop the site for flats and housing.
Giving us notice that we’d probably be out of here at the end of 2024.
He put in the application for planning permission, and we started to look around for a new home and how to make it happen.
It’s been an interesting learning curve, we’ve spent lots of time and energy looking at several alternative venues, particularly Plinston Hall in Letchworth.
They were either not suitable or they needed a huge amount of work and money spent on them to get them anywhere near to being road-worthy.
We have learned so much about business structures, Community Interest Companies, Buildings, Surveyors, Licensing, Governance etc we could probably write the book!

However, time was running out and at the same time Jas’s Planning Application isn’t looking quite as easy as he’d hoped either.

THE AWESOME NEWS.
A few weeks ago, we called a meeting with Jas to discuss both our situations and I’m delighted to say that we now have the opportunity to buy the place, if we can raise the money to do so.

Yes this is great news but it’s also very scary, we have to raise in the region of £2 – £2.2m, that’s a lot of money especially for a Grassroots Music Venue like us.

THE PLAN.
With everyone’s support we can do this, we need the whole community on board.
• We are setting up as a new not-for-profit Community Interest Company to purchase and run the venue.
• We will be running crowdfunders and prize draws.
• We will be inviting Donations.
• We want to run a share sale – giving everyone the opportunity to invest in the future of Club 85.
• As a CIC we’ll be able to attract grants and match funding from a myriad of funding bodies.

• And of course, lots of Fundraising events.

THE FUTURE.
There’s so much we can do to make the Grassroots Music Venue the centre of inclusive creativity our community deserves.
There will be lots more daytime use of the venue for classes, workshops, exhibitions, as a rehearsal space or for shooting videos.
The downstairs bar will become a quirky music bar/lounge, with sofas, a small stage, piano and congas!
There will be disabled toilet facilities on both levels and a lift, as well as events for people with extra needs, like special Sensory Sensitive Events that are quieter with static and soft lighting.
As a CIC we will be able to actively attract funding to bring a diverse programme of performances as well as for training future techs, promoters etc

Most importantly we will be a Beacon of Inclusivity in North Herts.

THE NEXT STEP.
 The Emergency Crowdfunder!

Statement from Bob and the team that run the Grassroots Music Venue at Club 85.

Statement from Bob and the team that run the Grassroots Music Venue at Club 85.

While we want to thank everyone for objecting to the planning application and thus showing the council how important the venue is to you and the town, we would like to encourage you to act with kindness towards our landlord, we have no ill will towards Jas, we understand his decision to retire and we can understand wanting to do what is in the interest of supporting family.

So, after a glorious 20+ years running 1000’s of gigs at Club 85, it is with great sorrow that we have to say we’re probably not going to be in this building for more than a year or so.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Jas and his family for hosting our Grassroots Music Venue and wish him well in his retirement.

While the our future is not yet secure, we are working to establish our options towards finding a positive resolution and even a new location locally that we aim to make even better for our community.

We look forward to continuing conversations with Music Venue Trust, North Herts District Council, stakeholders and the music community to ensure live music continues to thrive in our town.

Over the years we have proved that North Herts needs and supports a Grassroots Music Venue, so many acts have grown up on our stage and gone on to stardom and many successful industry professionals took their first steps with us.

We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far and look forward to continuing to bring great live music to our community.
We are going to need your support over the coming year or so to prepare for this move.
