BILLY POD – Quintessence
+ the Joe English Trio
+ DJ Sten King
Billy Pod is an award-winning Greek drummer based in London.
His debut album “Drums to Heal Society” (2019) has given him a prominent position among the new generation of international drummers and demonstrates his compelling skills as a composer and music ensemble director.
His latest album entitled ‘Quintessence’ is a reflection on the intellectual nature of humanity in modern society. It was well received by press, media and live audiences during his UK and European tour in 2023. It is a shining example of dynamic and lyrical contemporary jazz with haunting melodies and rich, complex moods.
Billy started playing the drums at the age of 7 and then took lessons in classical piano and violin. He has recorded more than 20 albums and has performed in festivals and venues in Europe, USA and Asia.
His musical style blends classical, rock and jazz influences, from Radiohead, Jean Sibelius, Philip Glass to Wayne Shorter and Thelonious Monk. In 2019 he made the list of ‘Top 10 new and upcoming drummers’ by French ‘Βatterie’ magazine and he performed at the Tribeca Performing Arts Centre in New York as a finalist in the Made In New York International Jazz Competition.
Billy left Athens to relocate to London in 2020 and since then, has worked with a number of leading UK jazz artists including: Jim Mullen, Dave O΄Higgins, Rob Luft (BBC NGA recording session at Maida Vale Studios), Mornington Lockett, Misha Mullov-Abbado, Vasilis Xenopoulos, and Gilad Atzmon.
At JazzUp Billy will present music from his latest album ‘Quintessence’.

Support: The Joe English Trio
Young, local pianist and Guildhall Jazz student Joe leads his brilliant trio for the whole season of JazzUps as part of our Youth Jazz initiative. This is enabled primarily by the proceeds from the JazzUp Spring Draw, which took place for the two limited edition Charlie Parker prints by artist (and bassist of The Specials) Horace Panter.
+ DJ Sten King
Our resident JazzUP DJ and core member of the JazzUp team Sten King delivers that unique JazzUp vibe. Sten is well known as a presenter of acclaimed hip hop radio shows such as ‘The Boom Bap Boutique’, and has built a reputation as the DJ that the musicians love as much as the audience.
