JAZZ UP! presents…
Horace Panter’s Soul Grooves
Following his last sell-out gig in 2019 we are over he moon to bring this British bass icon back to JazzUp. Horace Panter needs no introduction as founder member and bassist of The Specials.
After many Top Ten singles and achievements too numerous to mention, The Specials influence on British music is immense, and their blend of ska and rocksteady with punk’s energy and attitude is both the soundtrack of a generation, and a major force in contemporary music. Their new album ‘Encore’ was released in 2019 year and quickly went to No.1 in the UK Album Charts, followed by the highly acclaimed album, ‘Protest Songs’ in 2021.
As a bassist, Horace is a master of the rock-solid groove, and JazzUp gives him a chance to stretch out and lay it down on tunes by the likes of The Meters, George Benson and Booker T. Combine that with a blistering lineup of jazz soloists and you have a JazzUp not to be missed…
Not one but three Specials!…
Nikolaj Torp Larsen
The Specials keyboardist, co-writer and key component in their recent chart-topping album, Nikolaj is also a highly successful jazz musician and film score composer.
He has contributed to more than 70 albums and worked with artists including Adele, Jason Mraz, James Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson (w/Chaka Khan, Pointer Sisters, Gloria Gaynor, Sister Sledge and Grace Jones), Florence & The Machine, CeeLo Green, Jack Savoretti, Cat Stevens, Engelbert Humperdinck (w/ Elton John, Lulu and Ron Sexsmith), Lewis Capaldi, Lana Del Rey, Lianne La Havas and many more.
Kenrick Rowe
Specials drummer, and a regular and hugely welcome visitor to JazzUp, Kenrick is one of the most in-demand professional drummers on the scene, well known for his mastery of reggae with bands such as Aswad and Jazz Jamaica, and also for his powerful soul and funk grooves with many top bands. After a busy years touring the globe with PJ Harvey, and now The Specials, he’s ready again to lay down the groove for us at JazzUp.
George Vjestica
As well as leading the group Bandante, George is also known for working with singer Nick Cave, and with Warren Ellis on film soundtracks, The Proposition and Lawless. He has also performed on Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds albums, Push the Sky Away (as a guest) and Skeleton Tree (as a full-time band member).
He has also toured with John Squire (Stone Roses), appearing on the Marshall’s House album, and played guitar on KT Tunstall’s debut EP False Alarm.
Jim Hunt
Musical prodigy Jim Hunt’s career has taken in an extraordinary breadth of artists. As arranger, saxophonist and horn section leader he has toured and recorded with Primal Scream, Richard Ashcroft, and Paloma Faith to name a few. He’s particularly noted for his longstanding place in Amy Winehouse’s horn section, and current work with Noel Gallagher.
Dave Keech
The founder and Musical Director of JazzUp completes the outfit to create a powerful tenor and trombone front line. Dave is always active on the British jazz scene, doing regular gigs, and has recently spent time in the studio as a member of the horn section for Senegalese singer Modou Touré.
