SUMMARY:The Pad presents DUB PISTOLS / tbc
DESCRIPTION:Dub Pistols + Guests – Club 85 Hitchin – Saturday 14th December \nWe are pleased to announce the return of Dub Pistols for their annual sell out Xmas skank up at their hometown show at Club 85 on Saturday 14th December! \n2019 is going to be off the chain for the Dub Pistols. With a new album (‘Addict’) slated for release later in the year\, a documentary and even their own festival\, Barry Ashworth’s merry gang of outlaw reprobates are simply unstoppable. \nThe Specials and the 2-Tone movement brilliantly reflected the multi-racial nature of the UK’s inner cities back in the day. The Dub Pistols are like a 21st century equivalent — a riotous collision of drum & bass\, hip-hop\, ska\, dub and punk. One of the most exhilarating live bands on the circuit\, these festival favourites have survived international terrorism\, inter-band warfare and the wheels falling off their operation numerous times. Now a slickly drilled outfit\, they’ve nevertheless lost none of their kick-ass vitality and renegade edge wherever they rock up to play. \nDubbed ‘the hardest working man in showbiz’ by music industry peers\, Barry has worked in music all his adult life. An Ibiza original who had his life changed by acid house\, he started running club-nights in London and had soon formed a band\, Deja Vu\, who arrived during the Flowered Up/Happy Mondays ‘baggy’ era. \nWhen Deja Vu split\, Barry started DJing — badly\, at first — and the Dub Pistols formed out of some of these madcap DJ sessions. The last two subsequent decades have been a riot of storming shows\, missed opportunities\, big bad basslines\, calamities and triumphs — with scarcely a dull moment. \nThe first Dub Pistols album\, ‘Point Blank’\, came after Barry and one-time production partner Jason O’Bryan had signed to Concrete\, a subsidiary of DeConstruction Records. Early single ‘Cyclone’ dented the UK Top 40\, and other tracks like ‘Westway’ and ‘There’s Gonna Be A Riot’ had enough going on to land a US record deal with the mighty Geffen Records. \nConstant touring of the States followed while they readied their second album — although disaster struck just as it was about to be released. The 9/11 terrorist attack in New York meant that the album — which referenced international geo-politics in a no-nonsense fashion — had to be temporarily shelved. \nReturning to the UK with their tails between their legs\, Barry and co set about rebuilding their career. They hooked up with ex-Specials singer Terry Hall and roots reggae great Horace Andy for tracks on ’Six Million Ways To Live’ (ska cut ’Problem Is’ and ‘World Gone Crazy’ respectively)\, which kicked off their long association with assorted guest vocalists. Soon they were touring with Terry Hall and UK hip-hop don Rodney P\, and producing their most accessible album to date\, ’Speakers & Tweeters’ — which included a cover of ‘Gangsters’ by The Specials\, a live fave\, and ‘Peaches’ by The Stranglers. \nAt one of their big live shows\, the ant-racism festival Rise in London in 2007\, they were not only joined by Terry Hall on vocals but also another Specials mainstay\, guitarist Lyndal Golding. The rapturous reception that ‘Gangsters’ received was instrumental in The Specials getting back together the following year — and in turn they asked the Dub Pistols to support them for some of their comeback tour. \nThe Dubs themselves nearly fell apart\, Happy Mondays style\, while recording their next album ‘Rum & Coke’ in Barbados the following summer. “Our gear got pawned off\, members of the band were locked up\, the wheels came off — everything we did was just about partying and enjoying ourselves\,” Barry recalls. \nAfter the turn of the noughties they returned to more political fare with their ‘Worshipping The Dollar’ LP — featuring vocalists such as Akala and Rodney P — and introduced more of a drum & bass sound into their live sets and new songs. As the decade progressed they cemented their place as one of the mainstay festival bands in Europe — guaranteed to rock the house every single time. Their list of collaborators now reads like a who’s who of conscious lyricists. \nThe eighth Dub Pistols album ‘Addict’ — named after new track ‘Addicted To The Bassline’\, featuring Cheshire Cat — is a melting pot of dubwise sensibility\, junglist riddims and feelgood party anthems. ““I think it’s the best album we’ve ever done\,” says Barry\, although during the recording of it they tragically lost one of their members\, Will xxx. “That was a real down-point\, but we want to celebrate him in this album\,” Barry adds. \n‘Addict’ also features mic skills from 2-Tone heroine Rhoda Dakar\, stalwart MC Navigator\, long-term collaborator Lindy Layton\, and foundation MCs the Ragga Twins\, as well as permanent live vocalist of the past few years\, Mr Seanie T. It’s out in the autumn on Sunday Best. \nThe Pistoleros also have a documentary coming out about them\, WCPGW?\, and also their own festival in September — Mucky Weekend\, named after one of their most popular live tracks. “I’ve always wanted to do my own festival\, having come from a promoting background\,” says Barry. “God-knows if I’m just being an idiot\, but I’ve been to enough festivals in my time to know what makes a good festival. I’ve helped so many people with their festivals\, so it seems only natural to do our own thing now as well.” \n—————————————- \nTickets are on now sale £15 (+BF) from Seetickets.com:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/event/dub-pistols/club-85/1388490 \nTickets also available from our local outlets \nSupport TBC

SUMMARY:The Pad presents SARPA SALPA + BUTTERFLY + SARA
DESCRIPTION:SARPA SALPA + Butterfly + Sara + Guests \n7.30pm\, Friday 15th November. Club 85\, Hitchin\, Herts \nSince their formation George (Guitar)\, Marcus (Vox / Guitar)\, Ethan (Bass) & Charlie (Drums) have been making a lot of noise honing their live show. Taking influences from Foals\, Tame Impala & Friendly Fires\, Sarpa Salpa strive to create upbeat\, danceable tracks with unexpected changes and hidden meanings. \nThe band headed into 2019 as ones to watch following a hectic year playing over 60 shows with 20 UK Festivals including The Big Feastival\, Wilkestock\, BBC Introducing Live & BLOGTOBER Festival all whilst still working their day jobs. \nIn October 2018 the band released their debut single SMITH on digital and 7” vinyl format\, picking up favourable reviews and gaining airplay on regional BBC Introducing\, Amazing Radio & BBC Radio 6 Music\, sparking the interest and radio plays from both Steve Lamacq & Chris Hawkins. \nKeen to capitalise on the groundwork created by SMITH and relentless gigging\, the band kicked off 2019 with the release of “CASANOVA” in February. During the same week the band performed at Bedford Esquires as part of Independent Venue Week. Steve Lamacq attended the gig and subsequently played new single “CASANOVA” several times on his show on BBC 6 Music as well as interviewing the band on air\, comparing the bands intense live show to a “young Catfish & the Bottlemen”. \nA month later “CASANOVA” gained further recognition as BBC Radio 1 and made the track their BBC Introducing ‘Single of the Week’\, an achievement relatively unheard of for unsigned bands. Sparking plays and positive feedback from the likes of Greg James\, Matt Edmundson & Clara Amfo among others as well as bringing a whole new audience to the band. The band followed this up with packed out headline shows in April at Camden Assembly and Northampton’s 750 capacity Roadmender. \nReturning to the studio in spring\, Sarpa Salpa set about recording their new single “BEFORE IT GOES DARK” one of the bands darker tracks to date which was released in August which has picked up numerous airplay on Radio 1 (Jack Saunders) BBC 6 Music (Steve Lamacq / Chris Hawkins) & Radio X (John Kennedy) \nBUTTERFLY\nThe Butterfly sound has been described as “Psychedelic Everly Brothers”\nInfluences range from The Beatles to Sparks and Todd Rundgren\, and the four of them deliver it all onstage with fun and swagger. \nSocial media:\nInstagram : butterfly_band_official\nFacebook: Butterflybandofficial \nSARA\nExciting new artist SARA takes second slot on the evening Last year’s lo-fi single ‘Low Signal’ heralded an introduction to an artist who is set for a big year in 2019. SARA started as a solo music venture by singer songwriter Sarah Cosgrove with the release of her 2017 EP ‘Haunt’. Since then the project has evolved to encompass a bigger sound with the addition of two new members and increasingly diverse material. Citing influences as varied as Sufjan Stevens to Frank Ocean\, their tone shifts around acoustic\, electronic and indie\, all the while maintaining something personal\, with an unnerving vulnerability to their sound. \nUpcoming releases will see a huge shift in production from earlier offerings\, with bold song writing that underpins SARA’s main aim of always making something meaningful. You will be hearing much more from the songwriter in coming months\, make sure you make it in for her set! \nOpening guest TBC \nTickets are on sale now priced £5 from Seetickets.\nAnd all our usual outlets ….\nBar 85\nJolly Brown\nFarleys\nDavids Music – Letchworth\nUnikorn – Stevenage \n16+ with photo ID – younger patrons can be signed in at the door and accompanied for the duration of the show by a responsible adult. \nEarplugs are available upon request (50p). \nDownstairs bar open until 1am. \nLike all our gigs this show finishes well in time for the last trains North and South to Cambridge/Peterborough and London and we are just a 5 minute stroll from the station. \nFor full up to the minute listings please visit www.club-85.co.uk and consider signing up to our mailing list for information on existing and upcoming gigs straight to you! \nAnd remember… Club 85 loves you! xo
